Spitzer Clinches Nomination

May 30, 2006 – 7:49 am

In the biggest non-headline of the day, New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer was officially nominated by the State Democratic Party for Governor today in Buffalo. Sources tell us that the crowd was extremely excited and rowdy upon the announcement and why shouldn’t they be? It will take a New York miracle for John Faso (our predicted GOP nominee) to defeat him in November.

There are rumors circulating that the GOP may try to nominate Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi (a Democrat) to run against Spitzer but I don’t see it happening. You never want to get in bad with the new sheriff in town, especially one as tough and straight shooting as Spitzer has been. Accepting the other party’s nomination would send a strong and very obvious signal to voters that Suozzi cares more about his political career than the people of New York.

I’ve always been dumbfounded by the unnecessary formalities in politics. Everyone in the world and their mother knew that Spitzer had the nomination months ago yet the NY Democratic Party still needed everyone to shlep to Buffalo and waste time and money to officially do so.

Are politics ever going to become streamlined and efficient or is it always going to remain one cash grab-and-waste after another? I’ll give you one guess.
